Worldwide, the best and most well known VoIP company would be Skype. Skype is a free download and can be used for free for Skype to Skype phone calls. You can also sign up (for a fee) to be able to call normal phone numbers either from your PC or from a phone (when you buy the correct hardware).
If you live in Australia the best company would be MyNetPhone offering no contract phone setups with cheap call fees for local and international. The plans will give you more options and greater savings compared to your normal home phone.

VoIP
What is VoIP?
VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. VoIP allows people to make telephone calls through their Internet connection. VoIP uses the Internet Protocol instead of the traditional method. The great benefits of VoIP is that if you’re only using the Internet the only costs are from using the bandwidth of your Internet connection, it is basically the same as an e-mail except in a greater way.
VoIP also is referred to as Internet telephony, IP telephony or VOI. There are many Internet telephony applications available. Some, like CoolTalk and NetMeeting, come bundled with popular Web browsers.
So how is VoIP being used now?
VoIP has become really popular over the last few years. There are now specific VoIP phones that simply connect to your Internet. VoIP companies have made it possible to give your VoIP telephone a telephone number so that your VoIP phone can be used exactly like a normal phone to call people that do or don’t use a VoIP phone. The advantages of this are that all calls are astronomically cheaper. In my country (Australia) a local call is countrywide. Some companies make local calls free or very cheap and international calls are much cheaper than normal. If you are using a cable Internet connection (not ADSL) you can scrap your telephone line rental and simply use your Internet and a VoIP provider.
